It's Just Business

What is it about this time of year that compels us to reflect on the past and plan for the future? For some, it's a healthy recalibration. For others, it can feel like a spiral of regret or worry.

Do these musings truly shape our future success and happiness? Or are they fleeting moments of taking stock without lasting impact?

The answer, I think, is: it depends.

Still, like many of you, I find myself pulled into the familiar ritual of reflection. Here I am, the first week of December, trying to process the past year without falling into regret or anxiety about what lies ahead.

For me, 2024 brought a significant shift. I found myself between jobs, not working for most of the latter part of the year. If you've ever been through it, you'll know how it feels. A mix of fear, ego bruising and the undeniable sense that it is personal, that there is something wrong with you even when logic tells you otherwise.

In my industry, technology, people change jobs all the time and I'd always managed to stay in the game. But this time the music stopped and I didn't have a chair.

Despite my experience as a leader, it hit me hard. The familiar phrases I'd told others over the years felt hollow. "It's just business." "This could be the best thing that ever happens to you."

Yet as scary as it was, the process of rebuilding has been unexpectedly empowering. I had to work through the emotions, the sting of "no one wants me on their team", before I could let logic take over and move forward. I'd walked this path vicariously with friends and colleagues many times, but living it firsthand was a new and humbling experience.

Fortunately, I've landed a new role starting in the New Year. As I reflect on 2024, I realise the lessons I've gained aren't just tactical, like building a stronger emergency fund or keeping my LinkedIn profile fresh. The deeper lessons lie in how I managed the emotional impact.

2024 taught me resilience. It reminded me that setbacks don't define me, they shape me. I've learned to navigate change without letting it erode my confidence or sense of self-worth.

So, as I head into 2025, I'm not just better prepared. I'm stronger, more adaptable, and more grateful than ever. Reflecting on the challenges of this year has shown me that each obstacle makes me more capable of handling whatever comes next.
